I took Breakfast of Champions off the shelf tonight, all in an attempt to avoid any more grading.
It occurred to me as I read the preface that I have never read any Vonnegut as an adult. I read almost all of him as a teenager, pushing into my early twenties, and I loved it. I always preferred his nonfiction. I love that voice.
Consider:
"I have no culture, no humane harmony in my brains. I canapos;t live without a culture any more."
This is the brilliance of Vonnegut. The word "humane," is utterly appropriate. The last true moralist, Iapos;d be willing to argue (William Bennett can kiss my crudely drawn asterisk), but every book, every line, reads like a suicide note.
Iapos;m going to read on, and I might from time to time report on my findings.
So it goes.
